That sound ain't madonna's new album...

... it's the death rattle of the music industry.

Can't someone put it out of its misery? Watching it flail about like that, spittle-foam at the corners of its mouth, eyes with that thousand-mile stare... *shudder*

From "Slightly Homeless" to "Hep Jazz Musician" in under an hour

100_3965

Sorry bears, I need to change it up now and again. It all grows back. ;o)

(Plus, I'm wearing one of my xmas presents - a porkpie hat that finally fits!)

Might be the last you see of the big beard for awhile...

... I'm considering buzzing it down today to the amish thing or goatee.

bigbeard

I got everything I wanted for xmas! A house-load of hot bears for a few days, an evening with my loud and crazy family, and techie toys. Yay! What about you?
dedos and profundojoe just left to head back to Chicago.

Booooo.

Monday, December 24, 2007

profundojoe and dedos arrived earlier today after a detour to Zingerman's in Ann Arbor, and we caught up for a little while, then we went out to some deeee-licious ribs and I took them on a nickel tour of Detroit. They've settled in to snooze after we watched a movie, and I'm just an insomniac so I'm still up at 3am.

Tomorrow, the big family get-together...

From another blog I read frequently...

... Juan Cole, a Michigander and professor of history at the University of Michigan, writes a blog called Informed Comment, about Middle Eastern issues. His thoughts are generally very balanced and can be extremely informative about the history-driven issues behind sectarian violence and writes a LOT of detail about things going on not mentioned in the mass media here, and I learn something new every day even when I generally consider myself pretty well informed about the Middle East.

Anyway, today he defends Miss Teen USA 2007 South Carolina.

Just like in the radioactive glassy fields of what's left of a nuclear bombed city, Detroit slowly becomes overgrown with wildlife...

Incidentally, the whole series has been really good.

Aaaack.

NWS predicting 10-15" of snow for the metro Detroit area. Significant blowing and drifting with a 20-30 mph wind. It'll be cold, so that means the snow will be the light, dusty kind, so it's going to be a blizzard. Good thing we finished all the stuff we needed done today.

Good news: Found a great tiki mug at an antique store today!

More playing with the street-level views on Google Maps

This is what Detroit lets happen to its cultural institutions.

That's what's left of The Rhinoceros, an incredible historic building and at one time watering hole for Detroit's glitterati.

Also, right here is where my truck was stolen. I think you can still see the glass on the ground!

Hmm. Privacy concerns?

Google Maps is now doing the visualization thing in Detroit. I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. There's a lot missing, including my neighborhood, but just about everyone else that I know's house is in it.

They've also got some of it really wrong... Don't they check their data?

In a slightly more charming strain...

...... A good blog post about fair isle and stranded knitting. I wish I had read that before I knitted 's xmas stocking a few years back with his name in it. It wouldn't look as shitty as it does ;o)

Awesome!

Because I was reading 4chan.org/b before heading to bed, I got to watch a whole bunch of people die horribly in lava in my dreams!

Thanks, 4chan! Never will you find as wretched hive of scum and villainy on the intertubes. It's the Mos Eisley cantina with twice the hilarity and none of the morality. You'll see far worse than 2girls1cup there if you watch it - every racist, misogynist, perverse, vile and evil thing is there. Feast on it!

Oh LJ, I love to hate you...

Now it appears that somehow my "no anonymous comments" setting got changed (without my knowledge) to allow anonymous comments.

From (70.22.241.193):
what a bunch of whiney, fat assed cry babies. Leave it to the bears to start an argument of this sort. Sounds like what goes on within the bear clubs & communities......always stabbing each other in the backs and talking about one another, (yes & sleeping too)!

You guys really need to get over the bear411 thing. If your unhappy, leave, just fucking leave and grow up.

I have never ever in my life seen the biggest display in immaturity than I am seeing now.

Grow up, lose some weight, stop trying to be number one and please stop posting your pictures on the internet, its revolting...some of you look good, and you know it and some of you look really bad and you dont' know it and the ones that look good are whores with boyfriends who can't commit and have to advertise their nasty packages on the web.

GROW UP & MOVE ON with your LIVES

From a fellow bear who has evolved way beyond what you guys will ever be capable of. Enjoy your bear runs and your group sex and your shared partners and your open relationships and your hillsides, ect!

Poor thing, in such an existential torpor, shrieking at the dark knowledge that so few people believe the way he does. Pity.

Ok, so...

In what world of the software development business is it ok to shove massive changes out the door on your cash cow that nobody (!) seems to have really asked for without taking even a single day to test them?

"Sorry, we fucked everything up and don't really know how to fix it! Thanks! Keep paying us!"

Also, I think this is one of the things they're talking about with regards to searchability.

Next comes the automatic content filtering and blocking based on keywords and phrases.

Roughly chronologically - that link post I was talking about.

This is carried over from my LJ.

No, no, charming LiveJournal is the happy bunnies and rainbows site that does no wrong

Think again. Real nice. Thanks again, Six Apart!

OH NOES

Ok, so you can now hear an hour of ursusnoir and I talking about stupid bullshit and purple socks here or on iTunes here. Only for the truly excruciatingly masochistic.

My throat's now kind of sore

From something almost as fun as what you're thinking. I just recorded more than an hour with for his podcast Ursus@Large. Damn you for making me have fun doing a stupid podcast!

With all the LJ outsourcing and tech bungles, I've missed...

... catching up on my adamant atheist blogs!

Oh, PZ, won't you let me have your little furry ass babies?

Don't watch this video unless you've got an awesome tolerance for high-density super-concentrated stupid and dancing howling raving demented fuckwits. This is America, land of prophecies, dreams, and visions taken as insight, where imaginary demons and angels are supposedly fighting over a strip of pavement.

*dreamy sigh*

Interesting...

LJ doesn't mark inbound RSS/ATOM feeds as anything, including adult content. However, you can flag rss/atom feeds as well as individual items in them. I'm guessing people that publish those feeds have no recourse against it.

An interesting question, maybe I should check risks-digest

[... as part of a conversation about X10 security ... ]

Sultmhoor: Considering I get attacks daily on my non-broadcasting-SSID, MAC-locked-down, WPA2-pro wifi hub at home, hackers are up to every trick
Gnomer: really? hrm, I've not really monitored mine. Actually, I don't think I can
Gnomer: original Apple Basestation
Gnomer: since it's WEP only, I just have it turned off since it only slowed down throughput I just have no SSID broadcast and MAC-restricted
Sultmhoor: I didn't think I was even in that tech-savvy a neighborhood. There are at least 3 unencrypted cable-connected wifi hubs within range of my computer room
Sultmhoor: So what's the point of even trying to break mine?
Gnomer: someone you know?
Gnomer: enemy?
Sultmhoor: I don't think I have any enemies within wifi range...
Sultmhoor: but it did make me wonder whether it was possible to remotely hack a wifi hub, replace the firmware with something that allowed you to use the hub as a means to attack other hubs
Sultmhoor: that would seriously be the massive boon nigerian spammers and credit card looters would be looking for
Gnomer: or someone driving in to attach
Gnomer: heh

Stuff going on with LiveJournal.

LiveJournal's been sold off to a Russian company called SUP. The selling-off was pretty accurately guessed when the whole Strikethrough thing was going on.

Here's some info on what happened when SUP signed a contract to take on LJ's russian advertising and "livejournal.ru", which you might not have heard of if you didn't speak Russian.

Again, Ms rm asks some damn good questions.

There's a lot of fussing about a US-based company being owned by a Russian one, given how lawless Russia is and all the shenanigans (think, polonium) going on with the politics there. There's mention that the Russian-speakers living in Russia are pitching a fit and planning on leaving. Here's some interesting background on SUP.

Another interesting comment. I can't read as fast as people post :(

A couple of quick "Must Read"s for your Friday

A must-read editorial about the upcoming Golden Compass movie. Money shot quote:
It goes like this: If your ancient, authoritarian, immutable belief system is truly threatened by a handful of popular novels, if your ostensibly all-powerful, unyielding creed is rendered meek and defenseless when faced with the story of a fiery, rebellious young girl who effortlessly rejects your stiff misogynistic religiosity in favor of adventure, love, sex, the ability to discover and define her soul on her own terms, well, it might be time for you to roll it all up and shut it all down and crawl back home, and let the divine breathe and move and dance as she sees fit. Don't you agree?

Aww, yeah. Much thanks to paddbear who is excited as I am to see this movie.

Also, a must-read about the Salivation Army drooling on your tax dollar...

Marketing genius capitalizing on an "earthy" definition...

... or merely someone so incredibly stupid and clueless that they had no idea?
